A German Thanksgiving

This year was my third Thanksgiving with John's family. Holidays with his family are always a big deal since his immediate family is very close. This year, a few family members were absent and therefore we knew it was going to be a different Thanksgiving.

We had a few ideas on how to make this a special holiday, but in the end we all agreed on our "theme". While everyone else was having turkey and usual Thanksgiving food, we decided we were going to have a German Thanksgiving. Mind you, this family is no stranger to German food, as John's maternal grandfather's family is German.

On other holidays I have tried lots of different German foods so when they were throwing different options for this year's meal, I could give my two cents. It also helps that both John and I work for German companies. Needless to say, I have sampled enough to know that this would be a nice change. Plus, we all came to the conclusion that none of us liked turkey anyway!

They gave each other different designated meals to make, and when the day came, my mouth was watering just looking and smelling at all the yummy food.

Our most talked about item before the big day was the sauerbraten (pictured on the top right of the above photo), which I have also had before. When I kept thinking of this meal, all I could remember was that everyone had warned me about the smell, and that it took a few days to make. Sauerbraten gets marinated for several days and then finally gets it's unique smell. I also remembered it being very similar to "ropa vieja" (or "carne desmenuzada"), which is a Cuban meal I grew up eating. After finally eating it, it did not disappoint. Just thinking of this whole meal is making me very hungry right now!

I really wanted to share life moments again in my blog. I keep gathering so many photos and never share them anywhere. However, my blog is the perfect place for them as this is my one and only special place in the Internet that I can speak my mind without any judgement, or anyone getting bothered by the insane amount of photos I take. So I really hope you enjoyed hearing my voice again and we'll chat later.
